LIVESTOCK SHOW RULES AND
REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL RULES:
ENTRY DEADLINE IS JULY 17, 2009
All livestock and poultry exhibited must remain in the barn area at all times.
All animals must be fed and watered at least twice a day.
Exhibitors must keep their stalls and pens clean and neat.
If you fail to comply with A, B, or C you will be required to remove your animal from
the barn.
Junior exhibitors must dress appropriately for the show. This means clean
shirts/blouses and dark trousers (jeans will be acceptable). No halter tops or
shorts.
Judges must be treated with respect and inappropriate comments and behavior
towards judges will result in premium forfeit and disqualification from future show.
G. Chips for bedding will be provided. Additional bedding will be the responsibility
of the exhibitor.
H. Livestock entered in the Best Dressed Livestock Show must be entered and
shown in one of the respective shows and must meet the WV Dept. of Agriculture
health requirements.
I. Classes may be added, changed or deleted as needed by the show
management.
J. Premiums are not paid on any championship classes.
K. An awards program will be scheduled and all awards must be given at that time.
L. Open Show Classes are open to all exhibitors who meet animal requirements.
M. Market Classes and Special Classes are open only to Braxton County 4-H and
FFA.
N. A Mandatory Workshop for all 4-H and FFA exhibitors will be held prior to July
1, 2009. This means if you are exhibiting livestock as part of your 4-H or FFA
project you must attend and you may be required to bring your project animals.
(Market animals going to be sold in fair sale.)
O. All animals to be exhibited must be entered on proper entry form and this form
and entry fees must be received by entry deadline.
P. Animals entered in any junior show must be part of exhibitor’s 4-H or FFA
project and exhibitor must complete and turn in all required project materials by
August 31 to receive premium award. Exhibitors must complete and turn in all
project materials by August 31 for open show animals which are part of an
exhibitor’s 4-H or FFA project. For 4-H members, required project materials
include: project book, record guide and activity record. For FFA members,
required project materials include up-to-date records in the FFA Record Book.
For projects that may not be completed until after August 31 (e.g. participants in
State 4-H/FFA Livestock Roundup), project materials are due no later than one
week after the event in order to receive premium.
Q. All 4-H and FFA exhibitors are required to help with set-up and/or clean-up
of the Multipurpose Building. Failure to help with setup and/or cleanup will result
in forfeiture of ½ of the premium money generated from that exhibitor’s livestock
exhibits.
SECTION I—BREEDING LIVESTOCK
SUB-SECTION I -A BEEF CATTLE OPEN SHOW
A. All cattle exhibited must be halter broke.
B. Cattle to be exhibited must arrive at the barn by 12 noon, Tuesday, August 4,
2009.
C. Cattle will remain on exhibit until 9:30 PM, Wednesday, August 5, 2009.
D. All cattle must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health requirements.
E. Cattle that exhibit signs of illness or infectious disease shall not be exhibited.
F. Breeding livestock classes will be separated by breed.

infectious disease will not be allowed to exhibit.

SECTION II—MARKET LIVESTOCK
Market animals that do not meet weight requirements can only be showed in
special class and showmanship class.
Market classes are only open to Braxton County 4-H and FFA youth with the
appropriate approved project.
SUB-SECTION II -A MARKET LAMBS
A. All market lambs must arrive by 12 noon, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
B. Lambs will be accepted for exhibition only if tails are not docked shorter than
the level of the distal end of the caudal tail fold. Lambs that are properly docked
will have a minimum tail length of .7 inches at show, measured by the approved
measurement device, which will be placed against the base of the tail and
pinbones. If a market lamb and/or breeding sheep have been eliminated at an
official check-in at a 4-H and/or FFA show, event/activity due to dock length as
stated in our current policy they are ineligible for show in any future 4-H and/or
FFA market lamb or breeding sheep shows, events or activities.
C. All market lambs will remain on exhibit until Friday, August 7, 2009.
D. Market lambs must be born after January 1, 2009.
E. Lambs must weigh over 90 pounds to sell.
F. Three lambs may be entered. Two may be exhibited as singles. All lambs must
be exhibited as single or in pair.
G. Ewe lambs exhibited in breeding class will not be eligible to exhibit in market
classes or vice versa.
H. Exhibitor must own lambs 75 days prior to show (May 15, 2009).
I. All lambs must be tagged by a designated fair official by June 1, 2009 in order to
show and sell.
J. All lambs must be skin clipped after July 15, 2009.
K. All Lambs must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health requirements.
L. Lambs with signs of foot rot, sore mouth, or other illness will not be allowed to
exhibit or sell.
M. Premiums: Blue- $15.00; Red- $10.00; White- $5.00

D. Market steer must weigh over 950 pounds to sell.
E. Exhibitor must own steer by March 1, 2009.
F. Market steers must be tagged by a designated fair official by April 1, 2009 in
order to show and sell.
G. All steers must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health requirements.
H. Steers that are ill or have signs of infectious disease shall not show or sell.
I. Premiums: Blue- $20.00; Red- $15.00; White- $10.00
Class 71—Market Steers
SUB-SECTION II-C MARKET HOGS
A. Market hogs must arrive by 12 noon, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
B. Market hogs will remain on exhibit until Friday, August 7, 2009.
C. Market hogs must be born after January 1, 2009.
D. Market hogs must weigh between 225 and 295 pounds to sell.
E. Gilts that are exhibited in the breeding show are not eligible to show in the
market show or visa versa.
F. Exhibitor must own hogs 75 days prior to show (May 15, 2009).
G. All market hogs must be tagged by a designated fair official by June 1, 2009 in
order to show and sell.
H. All Market hogs must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health
requirements.
I. Exhibitors must provide a nipple waterer for their pen.
J. Market hogs that are ill or have signs of infectious disease shall not show or
sell.
K. Premiums: Blue- $20.00; Red- $15.00; White- $10.00

D. Market goats must be born after January 1, 2009.
E. Market goats must weigh over 60 pounds to sell.
F. Market goats may be does or wethers.
G. Goats must carry all kid teeth and will be mouthed at time of official tagging.
Wether goats with evidence of testicular
tissue will not be allowed to show or sell.
H. All goats must be dehorned or properly tipped and properly healed to show
and sell.
I. Does exhibited in breeding class will not be eligible to exhibit in market classes
or vice versa.
J. Exhibitor must own market goat 75 days prior to show (May 15, 2009).

SECTION III—SHOWMANSHIP
A. Junior Showmanship: Open to current exhibitors 14 and under (January 1,
2009) who have not previously won showmanship.
B. Senior Showmanship: Open to current exhibitors 14 and over (January 1,
2009) who have not previously won senior show- manship and
any exhibitor who has previously won junior showmanship.
C. Previous Winners Showmanship: Open to current exhibitors who have
previously won Senior Showmanship. The exhibitor
must exhibit the species which they used to win senior showmanship. The winner
of this class will not receive a
premium but will receive a trophy.
D. Exhibitors who win showmanship with no competition will remain in their age
division for competition at the next year’s fair.
E. Exhibitors must compete in showmanship to be eligible for premiums.
F. Exhibitors must use for showmanship one of the animals they exhibited in the
junior show as part of their 4-H/FFA Project.

D. All Rabbits must meet current WV Dept of Agriculture health requirements.
E. Rabbits that exhibit signs of illness or infectious disease shall not be exhibited.
F. Market rabbits must arrive by noon on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
G. Market rabbits must remain on exhibit until Friday, August 7, 2009.
H. Market rabbits must be born after May 1, 2009 and owned by June 15, 2009.
I. Market rabbits must weigh between 4 and 10 pounds to sell.
J. One Pen of market rabbits shall consist of 3 individual rabbits.
K. All market rabbits must be tattooed by designated fair official by July 1, 2009.
L. Premiums: Blue- $5.00; Red- $4.00; White- $3.00

SECTION V—POULTRY
A. Open show poultry must arrive by 12 noon, Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
B. Open show poultry shall remain on exhibit until 9:30 PM, Tuesday, August 4,
2009.
C. Exhibitor must provide cage.
D. All poultry must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health requirements.
E. Any poultry showing evidence of illness shall not be exhibited.
F. Broilers shall arrive by noon on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
G. Broilers shall remain on exhibit until Friday, August 7, 2009.
H. A pen of broilers shall consist of 3 individuals of broiler type.
I. Broilers must be hatched after May 1, 2009 and owned by June 15, 2009.
J. Broilers must weigh between 4 and 8 pounds to sell.
K. All broilers must be tagged by designated fair official by July 1, 2009.
L. Premiums: Blue- $5.00; Red- $4.00; White- $3.00
Class103—Open Poultry

SECTION VI - 4-H HORSE
Open only to Braxton County 4-H members.
Horses must arrive by 12 noon, Thursday, August 6, 2009.
Horses shall remain on exhibit until 9:30 p.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009. Riding
Helmets are required. Horse riding by exhibitors in this class is prohibited on the
fair grounds during the Braxton County Fairs and Festivals Celebration.
E. All horses must meet the current WV Dept. of Agriculture health requirements.
F. Premiums: Blue- $20.00; Red- $15.00; White- $10.00
Class105 – Halter Showmanship
BRAXTON COUNTY 4-H/FFA LIVESTOCK SALE
RULES 2009
1. Participants in the Livestock Sale must be Braxton County 4-H or FFA members
enrolled in the project appropriate for the animal they are selling by March 15.
2. Participants must exhibit all sale animals at the Braxton County Fairs and
Festivals Celebration. Participants must accompany their sale animal(s) during
the sale, unless an excuse has been granted by the Livestock Committee Chair.
If participant is not present during the sale and an excuse has not been granted,
animal(s) will not be sold.
3. Participants must declare which animals will be sold within one hour after the
completion of the show on Friday night.
4. 4-H livestock project books and activity records are due when non-livestock 4-H
projects and activity records are due. 4-H livestock record guides are to be
completed and FFA record books are to be up-to-date for sale animals and
turned in by August 31. Exhibitors who fail to complete and turn in by established
deadline all required project records for sale animals will not be allowed to sell any
animal in next year’s sale.
5. Exhibitors who sell an animal in the sale must agree not to ask the buyer or
buyers at any time, before, during or after the auction for the return of the animal.
Any exhibitor doing this will forfeit the privilege of participating in the sale next
year.
6. Exhibitors will have 1% of animal’s gross sale price deducted from proceeds to
cover auction expenses.
7. Participants must own, feed, care for, and house their animal. If the animal
cannot be housed at the participants' primary residence, approval must be
received from the Extension Agent and/or FFA Advisor. The following ownership
deadlines apply:
Market Steers - March 1, 2009. Born after January 1, 2008. Must be tagged by
April 1, 2009
Market Lambs – May 15, 2009. Born after January 1, 2009. Must be tagged by
June 1, 2009
Market Goats – May 15, 2009. Born after January 1, 2009. Must be tagged by
July 1, 2009
Market Hogs – May 15, 2009. Born after January 1, 2009. Must be tagged by July
1, 2009
Market Rabbits – June15, 2009. Born after May 1, 2009. Must by tattooed by July
1, 2009
Broilers – June 15, 2009. Hatched after May 1, 2009. Must be tagged by July 1,
2009.
8. Participants may sell the following:

In addition to the above animals a participant may sell:

each weight division, second Place, and etc.
11. No animals will be removed from barn after the sale until released by the sale
management.
12. All sale animals must be clean and dry on sale day by 2:00 p.m. in order to
identify sale order.
